Maria Lătăreţu (n. 7 noiembrie 1911, Bălceşti, Gorj - d. 23 septembrie 1972, Botoşani) a fost o cunoscută interpretă de folclor muzical românesc.
Dăruirii sale cântecului popular românesc stau dovadă şi numeroasele înregistrări la radio şi televiziune şi numeroasele materiale discografice.
Numita prim-solista a Orchestrei "Barbu Lautaru" a Institutului de Folclor, Maria Lataretu devenea din ce in ce mai cunoscuta. In curand, vocea sa a ajuns peste hotare si astfel au aparut ofertele de a concerta in afara tarii. Polonia, Cehoslovacia, fosta Uniune Sovietica, Egipt, Siria, Elvetia, Turcia, Ungaria, Grecia, Bulgaria si Iugoslavia sunt tarile care au invitat-o si care au primit-o cu salile pline.
Imaginati-va oameni veniti sa o vada si sa o asculte interpretand: "De ce nu te-nsori Gheorghita", "Lie, ciocarlie", "Radu mamii, Radule", "Sanie cu zurgalai", "Au plecat olteni la coasa".
In Egipt, Siria si Iordania, tari cu o alta cultura si mentalitate, s-a bucurat de un succes rasunator, primind titlul de "Printesa" ori "Regina cantecului romanesc". Profesorul Mihail Pop, aflat la o consfatuire pe teme folclorice, a fost surprins sa constate la Stockholm ca Maria Lataretu a fost foarte solicitata cu cantecul lung batranesc, oltenesc, vechi, arhaic, "Ma uitai spre rasarit", considerat si catalogat a fi unul dintre cele mai frumoase ale lumii.
Cea mai mare voce a cântecului popular românesc, Maria Lătăreţu, nu a fost uitată de gorjeni. După mulţi ani de încercări, în satul natal al acesteia, Bălceşti, s-a ridicat o casă memorială, cu sprijinul unor oameni de suflet.

My entry to the Bushman World Ukulele Video Contest 2008 http://ukuleleluau.com/uke-contest.html and to wish all my friends, subscribers and youtube viewers a "Mele Kalikimaka." When I started playing the ukulele, and knowing that Christmas was around the corner; I asked myself, "Is there such a thing as a Hawaiian Christmas song?" and by the powers of King Kamehameha, there is! It's "Mele Kalikimaka" Imagine Christmas in Hawaii...aaaaah. Never been, but would love to find out how it really is. I'm always fond of other cultures and it's music and learning the languages. Hope you learned something too=)

The song takes its title from the phrase of "Mele Kalikimaka," the Hawaiianized pronunciation of "Merry Christmas." The Hawaiian language does not include all the sounds found in the English language (notably the letter R). Thus the familiar English phrase of "Merry Christmas" when pronounced using Hawaiian language syllables becomes "Mele Kalikimaka" (note the substitution of L's for R's). "Mele Kalikimaka" is therefore not Hawaiian for "Merry Christmas," but simply a Hawaiian transliteration.
